Clarification: COVID-19 has proved to be far deadlier than the flu. In 2020 the coronavirus was associated with 19.6 million cases and 352,004 deaths, according to OurWorldInData. By contrast, influenza in the 2017-2018 season — the worst of the decade before the pandemic — saw 41 million cases and 51,646 deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
