The Bowie Baysox minor league baseball team is planning a celebration Thursday of the impending sale of the NFL’s Washington Commanders.
The Baltimore Orioles’ Double-A affiliate is offering $10 box seats for fans who come to Thursday’s 6:30 p.m. game against the Altoona Curve wearing Washington franchise gear — Redskins, Football Team, or Commanders.
There’s also a promotion planned around new owner Josh Harris, and new part-owner and Los Angeles Lakers legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson. Their ownership group announced plans Friday to purchase the franchise from the much-maligned Dan Snyder. The deal is pending NFL approval.
Fans with the name Josh or the name Harris will receive free general admission tickets, as will fans wearing Magic Johnson jerseys. The Baysox will also let one Josh, one Harris, and one Magic Johnson fan each throw out ceremonial first pitches.
The team is also lightly trolling Snyder. There will be games played in between innings looking back on the Snyder era, and the team will be offering a going away cake in Snyder’s honor.
“Longtime fans of the Washington franchise are celebrating the news of a sale of the team. And we just want to provide a light-hearted opportunity for Commanders fans to come out and enjoy a fun night at the ballpark as we commemorate this moment of transition,” Baysox General Manager Brian Shallcross said.
Harris is the managing partner for the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers and the NHL’s New Jersey Devils, and a general partner for the U.K. Premier League’s Crystal Palace F.C. soccer team.
